About us » Philosophy
At Monticello Academy, learning begins from the hands. We believe that children are unique individuals who learn best when they engage in active learning. In order to promote this type of learning in our curriculum, children go through three levels of learning: discovery, understanding, and application. Discovery begins with exploration. At this level they explore each introduced concept by answering and asking questions in relation to who, what, when and where. Understanding occurs when they have completely learned all about the concept by asking relevant questions. Application begins when they use what is being understood to apply it to their environment. Being able to take the knowledge at hand and being able to implement and apply it to their life are crucial processes in learning. We believe that in order to gain a world of knowledge, we have to build bridges from concrete thinking to abstract thinking by encouraging children to actively interact with their environment.
